"Madness and horror have always been my obsessions. The books I have written are just about that. After writing The Adversary I couldn't handle it any longer. I just wanted to run away". Determined to escape the bleak visions of his narratives, Emmanuel Carrère embarks on a trip to Kotelnich, a small post-Soviet town, to shoot a documentary. A Russian Novel is his first overtly autobiographical work.
The son of Hungarian refugees, Tibor Fischer's novel Under the Frog was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1993. He is the author of four other novels, as well as a collection of short stories. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, his work has been published in 25 languages.
